10 Frame Langstroth Hive:
Hives for early March have an overwintered laying 2022 queen with her OWN brood. This will allow for rapid expansion and a stronger start to your colony. Established colonies this early in the spring give you the best shot at harvesting honey you very first year!
All full hives will contain a 2022 overwintered queen that does NOT need to be introduced since this is her own colony. In addition, ALL bees will be treated for varroa within 90-days of pickup to ensure you are getting the highest quality, healthy and thriving colony.
Solid, clear (no knots) cypress wood is used not only for its beautiful aesthetics, but more importantly, its durability. While cypress is naturally rot-resistant, each hive and super we offer is weatherproofed so it won’t need continual maintenance and painting like commercial offerings made of untreated or less durable woods.
Each box corner features precision box joints, glued and pinned from the inside for maximum strength and an unblemished exterior (unlike nails or staples that can rust and work their way out to weaken the box). You may find cypress hives elsewhere, but OUR cypress hives and supers are literally built to last a lifetime.
Through experience, we’ve modified the industry-standard inner cover into a new design better fit for most beekeepers’ needs. Wire mesh is installed on both side of the inner cover creating 4 vents to allow maximum airflow during the extremely hot summer we experience here in the southeastern US. These mesh barriers keep pests out and prevent bees from building propolis (a sticky difficult mess) between the inner and outer cover. These vents also allow for safe, easy treatments against varroa mites when using FA pads while continuing to protect your hive from invaders
The aluminum covered telescoping outer covers provide protection against the elements.
Both wax and plastic foundation are utilized in our hives each with their benefit. We feel that the bees build more quickly on wax foundation and “take to it” more easily, however plastic foundation (double coated) is very durable and can be reused under most circumstances if needed.
Cypress / CDX plywood combo bottom boards are used for all the hives we have in our own bee yards, since they are about 50% lighter in weight, however we offer solid cypress bottom boards as an option. Both provide a very sturdy base to your hive. Please email us with your order number an request for a cypress only bottom board and we will happily accommodate. We build all customer hives each year so please provide ample time (at least 2 weeks before getting bees) for this request.
Each 10 Frame HIVE is poised for rapid and immediate build-up. You can expect:
Bees - (obviously!) and LOTS of ‘em! - laying queen/nurse/workers/drones
3-4 Frames of brood - capped brood/larvae/eggs
2-3 Frames of resources - capped honey/nectar/pollen
4 frames (maximum) bare/just-started wax foundation - allows for sudden expansion and the grown of the colony
Brood Box - 9-5/8” depth (deep) solid cypress wood with 4 integrated handles and additional weather-proofing
Frames - 10 deep wooden frames with a mix of plastic and wax foundation
Bottom Board - Exterior Plywood (Almost 50% lighter *recommended*) or Cypress upon request
Honey Super - 5-7/8” depth (shallow) solid cypress wood with 4 integrated handles and additional weather-proofing
Frames - 10 shallow wooden frames of wired-wax foundation
Queen Excluder - Plastic excluder to separate brood box from the super to prevent queen laying within the honey super
Inner Cover - quadruple wire-mesh vented for cooling and fall mite treatments
Outer Cover - telescoping cover with aluminum exterior to slick away the rain and elements
Entrance Reducer - controls the traffic of bees and protect against the cool in winter months
Vent Prop - increases ventilation throughout the hive in summer
DEPOSITS - Remaining balance is due on the date of pickup/meetup.
